I’ve update the Utah Open Source Planet to the latest code and cleared all the caches. This will make things funky in the short term, but better in the long run. Happy blogging (and cooking?).
The humble server that I use to host a few (11) web sites is getting updated. It’s not going to be that big of a deal (99% idle instead of 97% idle).
The big deal will be the addition of Xen, LVM and RAID. I’m thinking about setting up a small domU that will act as a firewall. It will also run Apache as a reverse proxy and Postfix as a transport relay to the domains that will get their own DomU (3 currently). Normally I would also have it run Asterisk to avoid NATing with SIP, but since I switched to IAX with my voice provider, I don’t think it will be necessary.
Anyway, the lights might go out for a little while. Don’t be alarmed.
I like giving a little nudge to those who have not submitted a photo for their Utah Open Source Planet hackergochi. Watch for these gems to show up as they post:

If you have others “heads” that should make the “missing” rotation, let me know.
Seems that others don’t like the fact that the Utah Open Source Planet is rotating a little fast. I guess it’s an 8 hour difference between Mountain Standard Time and UTC. Well, you can *not* slow the Planet’s rotation that much without major repercussions. Hold on to your seats, adjust your clocks and expect some breakage.
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the positive feedback from readers of the Utah Open Source Planet. I hoped that it would be a cool place for UT’s Open Source hackers to learn something more about each other and interact a bit. It seems that it has done just that. People have taken partial ownership of the site and consider it part of the community. I think that’s great. Thanks to everyone who participates and allows their feeds to be picked up here.
It seems that the best way to get people to notice the Planet (and your feed) is to link to it from your blogs. Have a look at the top 10 ways readers get here:
- 458 - google
- 289 - bloglines.com
- 277 - halls.lug-nut.com
- 115 - blog.josephhall.com
- 110 - blog.mecworks.com
- 107 - pthree.org
- 106 - fozzilinymoo.org
- 95 - planet.gnome.org
- 61 - blogs.gnome.org
- 45 - gundy.org
Planet citizens are second only to google in bringing new readers to the UOSP. Please consider blogging about UOSP if you have not yet done so. Also, a blog-role is a great place to link to the Planet.
Those of you who don’t have your headshot to me, stop being shy|lazy|forgetful. We like putting names to faces. Don’t worry, I think everyone hates their hackergochi. Get me a picture with good lighting for best results.
Lastly, those of you who read and have not added your feeds - get on the ball! We want to hear what you’re hacking on (BSD, Linux, Life… whatever)! I personally know several people that are conspicuously missing from the Planet. How about the guys in southern Utah? Where are you? Where are all the Novell hackers? What about the guys at Linux Networx? How about Xmission guys? I’d like to see the Open Source centric companies show up in numbers (see Guru Labs for an example).
I guess that’s it for now. Thanks again to all those who make UOSP fun to read!

I thought the readers of the Utah Open Source Planet would like to know about Elijah being in the latest Gnome Journal. Elijah is also part of Planet Gnome and sends a bunch of readers our way when he mentions our humble little Planet there.
Elijah, thanks for the work you do for G. N. O. M. E. ;)
The planet is looking good. We’re now pulling down 40 feeds. The Google maps hacks are up (you web two.oh heads can trick them out if you like - I’m still web one.zero). However, people need to get their remaining information to me. And there are other Utah locals that should be on there still.
Here are your jobs…
- Get me your missing info.
- Send a headshot if you haven’t yet.
- Get your lazy Open Source friends to aggregate on the planet.
We could use some Google juice. When Elijah mentioned our planet on planet.gnome.org, we got tons of visits from that. Jayce^ and fozz also sent a lot of traffic our way. As more visitors see the planet, more visitors will discover your site. Consider linking to the planet to bring it out of darkness!
No, I didn’t get Google Maps integrated into Utah Open Source Planet (been *way* to busy at work). But, while messing around with it, I noticed my neighborhood has been updated. Here you see (bottom right) the plot where my house was built.

Anyway, If you are on the Planet, please send me your longitude and latitude so I can place you on the map. Point us to your home, work or a park near by. The best site to find your longitude and latitude is GeoCoder.
UPDATE:
I should have been more clear. Can I get longitude and latitude like this?
lon = ##.######
lat = -###.######
Email them to gabe(a)gundy.org.
There is a new Planet hosted at OpenClue for Open Source hackers/users/zealots who are active in the Utah community. Why would OpenClue host this? From their web page:
We believe in Open Source. We believe in sharing information.”
Let’s hope that sharing these feeds will make Utah’s Open Source community a little bit stronger :)
